There is no doubt that unwanted water in your home is a pain both emotionally and financially. Although damage from natural water, such as rain and flooding, are difficult to avoid, there are some methods you can follow in order to stop home water damage, like broken pipes and leaks, from occurring. Here are a few tips from us!
Do Not Ignore Leaks!
Not repairing even the smallest leak can lead to a disaster. Long-term leakage can cause mildew, mold, rotting, and even the destruction of a structure in your home. No leak is too small so act quickly to avoid further damage and money loss.
Clean Your Gutters
It is recommended to clean your gutters at least twice a year, for this avoids blockage and ice dams. When water is sitting in one place, it can cause damage to your gutters and roof. Also, the overflow of water may create puddles that can damage your foundation.
Water Pressure
The usual PSI (Pounds per Square Inch) for residential water systems is from 40 to 70. You can purchase a water pressure gage from a hardware store. Go outside and attach it to a faucet then turn the faucet to full force. If the PSI is set over 100 PSI, pipes and hoses may break because of the excessive pressure. A pressure regulator can also be purchased at a hardware store.
Bushes, Trees, and Roots, Oh My!
Most homes have trees or bushes outside. Although they're great for decoration and the environment, it could become a potential problem. Their roots can wrap around your pipes and break them. It is vital to keep landscaping away from utility pipes or remove trees and bushes that have become too big.
Disconnect The Hose
Water inside a hose can freeze all the way back into the pipe and create an ice block. This will either stop your water flow or bust your pipes that creates damage to walls, floor and foundation.
Maintenance
The same way you check your car every couple of months, you should keep up with your home appliances. Things such as dishwashers, sinks, and refrigerators need to be checked in case there they have any broken pipes, ripped hoses, or just dripping water. Stop the problem before it even starts.
